At Your Pleasure by Meredith Duran5/28/2023 Everything that appealed in those, Miss Bates found in gentler mode in Fool Me Twice: a sensitivity to the class issues of the day, a complex heroine, a flawed and compelling hero, wondrously good writing, a central couple who talk more than they couple and embody a meeting of equals akin to Jane and Rochester, who ” … stood at God’s feet, equal … ” Duran has been a favourite since Miss Bates was enthralled by The Duke of Shadows to the more recent, and one of Miss Bates’ favourite romance novels, A Lady’s Lesson In Scandal. Okay, Miss Bates thought, maybe it’s the European historical one should give up … and then she read Duran’s Fool Me Twice and, as Shakespeare’s Macbeth says, “mine eyes are made the fools of the other senses.” Miss Bates was all eyes the two days it took her to read Duran’s novel: eyes glued to e-reader through workplace lunch hours, sneaked-in quarter hours, and staying up too late only to appear bleary-eyed at the breakfast table until she was delivered of a thoroughly satisfying end by late afternoon. Her faith was restored by Lin’s 9th-century-China tale of mystery and romance, that of the smooth, skillful writing and historical authenticity. Until Miss Bates read Jeannie Lin’s Jade Temptress, she’d despaired of recent historical romances.

Stagestruck by Peter Lovesey5/27/2023 And, yet, the minute she says her first line it is immediately obvious that what she doesn’t have is acting ability. She has the poise, the charisma, the stage presence to pull off the character. People had taken Clarion’s word and that of her manager, Tilda Box, that Clarion is a natural to play Sally Bowles. That the run of the play is sold out convinces the actress, the director, and the trustees of the theatre of Clarion’s popularity and ability to generate money.Įverything is pointing to the great success of the run, financially and theatrically, until dress rehearsal when a significant problem appears. Clarion believes absolutely that she is their equal. The venue she chooses is the venerable and well thought of Bath Theatre Royal, a stage that has seen actors the calibre of Ralph Richardson, Joan Plowright, and Alec Guinness. There isn’t any singing in the play but Clarion is convinced that she has the acting ability to produce a better than good Sally Bowles. The vehicle Clarion chooses as a showcase for her talent is I Am A Camera, the play upon which Caberet is based. Clarion Calhoun is a rock star whose curriculum vitae includes “stage training”, although the where and the when of this training is lost in the fog of selected publicity. But…rock stars age and fans can be fickle, so it is sometimes necessary to get a name back in lights in an unexpected way. She has performed live and loved every minute of it. Clarion Calhoun is a rock star whose concerts filled stadiums.

Replay book sharon creech5/27/2023 Throughout, Burns reads with an often halting rhythm, rarely allowing readers to catch the beat of the tale, or of some of the more poignant or humorous bits in the writing. These components may prove helpful in print, but are overwhelming and somewhat confusing on audio. At the recording's outset, readers hear a lengthy listing of Leo's extended family members as well as a recitation of the cast list for the play. The elements of the play-within-the-novel device and the inclusion of Leo's frequent daydreams make the story's transition to audio a bit rough. But fantasy and reality dovetail nicely at the end as Leo learns more about his family and his role in it. Along with learning his lines, Leo spends much of his time rewinding and replaying scenes from his life, of course, dramatically fashioned to his liking. None of his accomplishments seems to measure up to his siblings' efforts and he is the only one excited about his winning a role in the school production of drama teacher Mr. Though he has a grand imagination and big dreams, young Leo often feels invisible in his large Italian family. The play's the thing in this uneven audio adaptation of Creech's latest novel.

Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies5/27/2023 Amplified Animal Aptitude: Pretty much subverted the deer are deer.Actual Pacifist: Rannoch is this for a while, refusing to fight Sgorr. Not to be mistaken for the other xenofiction series about bringing fire. The spiritual sequels, The Sight and Fell, feature wolves, but are set in the same world as Rannoch's story (albeit in Transylvania). If he survives the insane dystopian army in pursuit of him.ĭark, beautiful, and rich in Anyone Can Die, the story's more fantastic elements, namely the epic clash between good and evil, are firmly rooted in the nature of deer. A prophecy surrounds Rannoch's birth: he will become the savior of the deer. The story begins with the birth of the fawn Rannoch on the night his father is murdered by the forces of Drail and Sgorr, a tyrannical pair of deer who have forbidden the yearly play of antlers that ensure a change of leadership. Fire Bringer is a xenofiction novel written very much in the vein of Watership Down, but David Clement Davies's tale features red deer in Scotland during the Dark Ages.

Reverie ryan la sala5/27/2023 There are no plot points fueled by what if everyone finds out I’m gay paranoia. We learn, “Maybe a more astute child would have tried harder to rein themselves in, but Kane was the last to know he was gay and therefore powerless to deny it once he was finally told.” The word powerless might be there, but there’s also a power to this post-coming out point of view - a welcomed result of books about queer characters actually being written by queer people. That is, those like Kane - whose coming out experience mirror’s La Sala’s - don’t really have the ability of being in because their childhood eccentricities effectively outed them. “For some queer people, coming out is something that’s done to them,” says La Sala, who wrote the novel while he lived in Roxbury, the South End, and Somerville before moving to New York City this past summer. Long before readers discover protagonist Kane Montgomery shooting rainbow-hued fire from his hands at a scene-stealing drag queen villain, readers realize that the characters in "Reverie" wield their queerness as power. Mostly, though, the book is queer as hell. Both the others in society and also the capitol-O Others, or what a group of four teenagers call themselves when they develop magical powers and battle chaotic forces in their small Connecticut town. 3 from Sourcebooks Fire - is the story of others. Realpolitik by John Bew5/27/2023 Whether in Spain, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, or Iraq, many now believe that intelligence agencies should follow the lessons of Ulster in their efforts at brokering peace. It is believed that Britain avoided rigid preconditions in its meeting with the IRA, a move that encouraged other governments to seek similar. Northern Ireland's peace agreement, which put an end to IRA aggression, has been widely admired as a stellar model of conflict resolution. Tales from margaritaville5/27/2023 Envisioned as a logical progression of Margaritaville’s brand of Flor-ibbean fun in the sun, Margaritaville at Sea offers 3-day, 2-night sailings from West Palm Beach to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.īuffett’s Music is Front and Center (And Even in A New Jimmy Buffett-Penned Show) And his comment turned out to be quite the understatement, considering that he happened to be playing his signature song on the pool deck of a 1,680-passenger cruise ship named Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.īuffett’s impromptu 10-song setlist capped the May 12 debut of the ship, which less than an hour earlier had been officially christened by godfather and NFL linebacker Shaquem Griffin. “This turned out to be a pretty good 3-minute song,” the singer/songwriter/businessman wisecracked. From : “ Cruise Away to Margaritaville: First Impressions of Margaritaville at Sea Paradise“īarefoot, grinning and tongue firmly in cheek, Jimmy Buffett paused momentarily while performing his 1977 smash hit, ‘Margaritaville.’ |
